Year-old texting-while-driving ban nets Pa. over 1,300 tickets.
It's only been a year, but 111 people in Montgomery County have already felt the burn. On March 8, 2012, the new Pennsylvania law took effect – no longer could drivers in the Commonwealth text and drive. In the year since, over 1,300 tickets have been issued to drivers in the state, according to the AAA Mid-Atlantic. Of those tickets, 40 percent were issued in the Greater Philadelphia area. Where did Montgomery County stack up? Area residents netted their fair share of offenses. In the last 365 days, 111 tickets were issued to Montco drivers for texting while driving. If you plan on using the Pennsylvania Turnpike through Willow Grove this weekend, you may want to avoid nighttime travel. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has said that Easton Road will be closed and detoured between Fitzwatertown Road and West Mill Road in Upper Moreland on Saturday, March 9 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, March 10. Loftus Construction will be removing steel beams from the Turnpike mainline bridge located a half-mile south of the Willow Grove ramps. Officials will discuss “Operation Safe Holiday,” an initiative including seat-belt, aggressive-driving and impaired-driving enforcement, and the consequences of driving impaired by drugs or alcohol at a press conference today at the Montgomery County Courthouse. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that all driver license and photo centers, including its full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed Saturday, Nov. 10 through Monday, Nov. 12 in observance of Veterans Day. PennDOT announced Monday that several state highways, including I-95, I-476 and I-76, would be closed to all non-emergency vehicles until 2 a.m. Tuesday morning in response to Hurricane Sandy. The transportation department closed "the full length of Interstates 95 and 676; I-476 (non-toll portion); I-76 from the Pa. Turnpike to Passyunk Avenue and the U.S. Route 1 Extension in Philadelphia to all traffic except emergency vehicles," according to a release. The PA turnpike remains open. Before the closing, all area highways were placed under a 45 mph speed restriction. The Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority will close County Line Road between Route 232 (Huntingdon Pike/Second Street Pike) and Pine Road in Upper Southampton and Lower Southampton townships, Bucks County and Lower Moreland Township, Montgomery County beginning Sunday (Oct. 21) for water main installation, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced. PennDOT has announced that parts of County Line Road will have lane closures in Lower Moreland Township. The Bucks County Water & Sewer Authority will be test drilling and will cause lane closures between Centennial Rd. and Pine Rd. Morning commuters should expect some delays since work will start at 9 a.m. Lane closures are expected to end about 3 p.m. Test drilling will occur from Oct. 15 to Oct. 19.

PennDOT announced that Washington Lane in Lower Moreland Township is closed today, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for base repair. The road is closed and there is a detour between Terwood Rd. and Welsh Rd. The road is expected to be open Tuesday, Oct 16.

Judge Robert Simpson issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday morning, halting certain aspects of the Voter ID Law from impacting the November presidential election. While the decision does not repeal the law that requires citizens to show photo identification to vote, if upheld, the ruling allows registered voters to cast ballots without an ID.
