Toomey Gun Control Amendment Fails in Senate

The Senate rejected Pat Toomey's attempt to expand background checks via a controversial gun control amendment voted on Wednesday afternoon.

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey sounded unconcerned in a conference call Wednesday when a reporter asked about the possibility that his NRA rating would be downgraded because of his recent compromise move on gun control. "This is not about the NRA or politics for me," Toomey said. The Toomey-Manchin amendment to expand background checks was narrowly defeated in the Senate on Wednesday afternoon. The vote was 54 yes to 46 no. Sixty votes rather than a simple majority were needed to pass the amendment. Toomey issued this statement just after the vote: “I did what I thought was the right thing for our country. I sought out a compromise position that I thought could move the ball forward on an important matter of public safety. My only regret is that our…

PA Mental Health Records Included in Gun Check Database

The State Police have complied with State Rep. Todd Stephens' request to have mental health records included in a national gun check database.

It took 18 months, but State Rep. Todd Stephens said the Pennsylvania State Police have begun sending the mental health records of people prohibited from buying firearms to a federal database. Stephens (R-151) of Horsham, has been working for a year and a half to prevent what he calls a “loophole” pertaining to the inclusion of mental health records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). Without that inclusion, Stephens said anyone from Pennsylvania who has been involuntarily committed, or found to be mentally deficient - and thus ineligible to buy firearms - could travel to another state and buy a gun. Earlier this month, Stephens said he intended to introduce legislation that would require that the state's …

So right! This is a very huge HIPPA violation and people should write their Senators, Congress etc. opposing the HIPPA violation. Yes, their should be a ban on assault weapons and stricter gun laws, though to very possibley violate innocent mental recipeints is an unfair price. To have already had state police have peoples's records with Todd Stevens blessings is an outcry. What other rights will…   more ›

Gun Sales in Montgomery County on the Rise

As Capitol Hill debates gun control, sales and registrations in the county are booming.

Business is booming. Those in the gun-selling industry are finding a good deal of action in Montgomery County. According to an article in the Pottstown Mercury, the counter in spots like the French Creek Outfitters has seldom dropped below a dozen customers all day long. In the wake of the debates on Capitol Hill and President Barrack Obama's recommendations on gun control, the sales and registrations in the county have been on the rise. Many makes and models are sold out at local gun shops. "When asked about AR-15 rifles, one employee shook his head. 'We’ve been sold out of those for weeks,' he said," quoted the Mercury article. Many local vendors are noting the sales went up more after Wednesday's statements by the president. "Gun shops …

Gun Owners Expected to Rally for Jan. 19 'Gun Appreciation Day'

"On 01/19/13 go to your local gun store, gun range or gun show with your Constitution, American flags and your 'Hands Off My Guns' sign to send a loud and clear message to Congress and President Barack Obama," says coalition website.

A conservative group is hoping that tens of thousands turn out to show their support for gun ownership with their pocketbooks and picket signs the day before President Barack Obama is sworn in for a second term. The group, a coalition brought together for the event, declared Jan. 19 "Gun Appreciation Day." The hope is Americans nationwide will show their support for gun ownership by turning out en masse at gun stores, ranges and shows from coast to coast. “The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people,” said Gun Appreciation Day chairman Larry Ward in a press release.  The day comes as the gun control debate becomes more divisive. Earlier this …

Obama Unveils Gun Control Proposals

The recommendations are a result from Vice President Biden's commission that investigated U.S. gun laws in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

In an address to the public Wednesday afternoon, President Barack Obama announced that he will sign 23 executive actions that provide law enforcement, schools, mental health professionals and the public health community more tools to combat gun violence. The actions include launching a responsible gun ownership campaign, having the Consumer Product Safety Commission review standards for gun safes and locks, nominating a director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and directing the Center for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence. Obama also want to improve incentives and look at removing any unnecessary legal barriers that may prevent states from sharing information with the federal background …

Bill Would Make PA Gun Restrictions National

State Rep. Todd Stephens of Horsham plans to introduce legislation that would require the Pennsylvania State Police to upload information about people not legally permitted to buy guns in Pennsylvania into a national database.

As it stands now, anyone from Pennsylvania who has been involuntarily committed, or found to be mentally deficient - and thus ineligible to buy firearms - could travel to another state and buy a gun. State Rep. Todd Stephens (R-151) of Horsham is looking to prevent what he calls a “loophole” pertaining to the inclusion of mental health records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).  “What I’m proposing is already the law in 17 other states,” Stephens said. “I’ve been working on this initiative for a year and a half urging the state police to add this data to the national database.” Currently, the Pennsylvania State Police include mental health commitments in the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS), according …

Video: Allyson Schwartz Condemns Sandy Hook Attack

Schwartz: ‘We must do better to understand and treat mental illness … we must move our nation toward common sense, reasonable gun laws.’

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-13, delivered a statement on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday during debate on House Resolution 833, a resolution condemning the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.  “The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was shattering for Americans everywhere. For such an unspeakable act of violence to take place at an elementary school: a place of safety, learning, and lively spirit, was devastating. My sons are grown, but my memories from their first days at school are still vivid,” Schwartz said. See the video above.

NRA Pledges 'Meaningful Contributions' in Wake of School Shooting

The National Rifle Association will hold a "major" news conference Friday as it promises to help make sure a tragedy like the mass murders at Sandy Hook Elementary never happens again.

The National Rifle Association issued this statement Tuesday in response to the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.: "The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown. "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. "The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. "The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21. "Details will be released to the media at the …
