The salon is offering discounted packages for prom hair styles and a little something extra for mom, too.

With Junior and Senior Prom around the corner for Lower Moreland high schoolers, a local salon is offering special hair style packages—with a free gift card to give to their mom—to help curb the costs of the big night out. Salon 360 and Ani White Cosmetics has two packages to save girls money. The first, which will run $100, includes an elegant evening hairdo, makeup application, false eyelashes and lip gloss. For an extra $25, girls can get the second package that includes all of the previously mentioned items, plus a manicure and pedicure. New Blow Dry Bar Brings New York Fad to Huntingdon Valley

Blo/Out features shampoos, blow drys and styles.

If you're looking for a cut and color, Huntingdon Valley's new niche salon—Blo/Out Blow Dry Bar—is the wrong place to visit. The trendy salon only shampoos, drys and styles hair. Founder Avi Shenkar was about to embark in a partnership to create a high-end full-service salon, but a friend from Miami told him about a new salon fad that stole his interest. "She said she was addicted to blowout bar concept," Shenkar explained. "She referred me to a Wall Street Journal article, and it sold me." After doing a little research, Shenkar said that he realized no one had set up a blow dry bar in the Philadelphia area. He said the closet location is in New York. "That really took me," he said. "So I got out of the full salon partnership and went full…

Huntingdon Valley Chocolatier Reaches National Market

Though the Candy Cottage Company works with companies worldwide, owner Al Palagruto strives to maintain the quality and personality of a small town business.

Back in 1979, a newly married couple had the idea to start making chocolate covered pretzels and selling them door-to-door, and now, more than 30 years later, the is still going strong in Huntingdon Valley. Al and Joan Palagruto started making candy of various sorts for friends and family, and it snowballed from there, Mr. Palagruto explained. Now they are known for their "Ultimate Pretzels." "Everyone describes it so differently," Palagruto said. "Basically [an Ultimate Pretzel] is way, way beyond a piece of candy. It's a confection. A dessert lover's fantasy. It's got gourmet taste of salty and sweet, drenched in chocolate: milk, dark or white [and is] topped with various toppings from crunch, flavor to color." One of Candy Cottage's …

Pairing Wines For Your Thanksgiving Feast

Here are a few simple guidelines that take the mystery out of picking the right wines, including lots of good, local options.

Everyone knows what belongs on the Thanksgiving table - the turkey, the vegetables, the rolls. But when it comes to wine, some people can get intimidated. Never fear, says Kim Graziano, event planner at Chaddsford Winery. "It's such a fun time to try different wines, maybe local wines you haven't tried before," she said. She said the classic dishes like turkey and ham call for a white wine that's crisp, dry and light. Specifically, she suggests looking at a riesling wine, but make sure it's dry. That means a German, Austrian or Alsatian style - check the label on the back. Sauvignon blanc is another good choice. Plus, with a big meal and large crowd, there's a chance to experiment a little, too. "With a bigger group, there is definitely …

Does anyone have an opinion on how long you can realistically keep White Wine before it spoils (assuming bottles are stored on their side in a cool, dark basement but not a "Wine Cellar")?   more ›

Yes to the Dress will once again team up with Brides Across America to donate wedding dresses to military brides-to-be.

Yes to the Dress, located in the Valley Courtyard, teamed up with Brides Across America back in July to help make wedding wishes come true for Military Brides-to-Be. Local Shop Gives Customers Free Burgers for a Year

Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries celebrated its grand opening in the Marketplace Shopping Center in Huntingdon Valley on Wednesday by giving the first 40 customers free hamburgers for a year.

In today’s economy, everybody likes something for free. So to kick off the grand opening of Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fries, 2028 County Line Rd. in the Marketplace Shopping Center at Huntingdon Valley, the local shop ran a promotion to give away free burgers for a year to the first 40 customers in line Wednesday morning. The store opened at 11 a.m., but the line was already well around the corner about a 30-45 minutes before it was officially open for business. Local residents were lined up across from L.A Fitness and next to Rita’s Water Ice to try and get their free, eight-ounce patties for the next 365 days. It created such a buzz that some eating enthusiasts camped out the night before as if they were trying to get tickets to a …

Huntingdon Valley's Very Own 'Chocolate Factory'

Lily Leong's passion for creating delicious treats has led to a career in the food business. You can find her sweets at Addic Treasures in the the Valley Courtyard.

Lily Leong is on a mission. She wants to “spread chocolate love.” So, each day she trades in her computer for an evening with a bowl and spatula. By day, she’s a legal assistant at Reed Smith, a Philadelphia law firm.  By night, she delicately prepares handmade chocolates.  Don’t be mistaken, though, she’s not quite ready to quit her day job. She is fairly content with being a part-time chocolatier. “I always wanted my own chocolate shop, but I don’t want to be a starving artist,” said Leong, whose delicacies are available for sale at Addic Treasures, 2525 Huntingdon Pike in the Valley Courtyard Shoppes. Leong, who sells under the name Lily’s Chocolates, is one of more than a dozen vendors whose wares are for sale at the unique gift shop…
