Planning a vacation or just a day trip? Patch has all the information on the Shore's best beaches
More than six months after Superstorm Sandy caused unprecedented damage to the Jersey Shore region, the beaches will be open for Memorial Day Weekend and the summer. While certain access points and facilities might be closed as municipalities continue to work on restoration, for the most part, the beaches will be operational. The only beach that remains off limits to the public is Mantoloking. The borough was home to a breach that split Ocean County's northern barrier island in half and was one of the hardest hit communities in New Jersey during the storm. So as you prepare to stick your toes in the sand, are you wondering what will be accessible after Sandy? Need to know how much it will cost to buy badges to your favorite beach? Curious …

The Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) SkillsUSA school-wide officers have chosen to support the American Red Cross in their mission to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy as their community service project for the year. In November, the SkillsUSA Officers collected $449 from fellow students, faculty, administration, and staff members. After witnessing the effects of the storm locally and watching news footage of the widespread damage, the EASTERN SkillsUSA officers approached their SkillsUSA advisor, Ms. Karon Crickmore, about a potential fundraiser. Ms. Crickmore supported their endeavor, and the students immediately began their request of at least $1 per person. On December 14 at 8 a.m., Michelle Wigianto, Major Gifts …

Across the country people receive a false robo-call saying the date of the presidential election was changed due to Hurricane Sandy.
Mark Schultz was "a little dumbstruck," but not surprised when he received a robo-call at his house in Holliston, Massachusetts Saturday around noon. The call said "Hi, I'm one of your neighbors in Holliston and ... I want to urge you to vote for Elizabeth Warren and Barack Obama on Wednesday, November 7." The date, said the call, had been changed because of Hurricane Sandy. Thankfully the Democratic Town Committee member knew this information was incorrect, but he posted to Facebook to make sure others knew the same. The caller ID listed it as Massachusetts 000-0000. The registered Democrat said he has heard of this happening around the country, but not in this area. "It's a new low in campaigning," he said, adding, "I don't know who it …

By Eric Boehm | PA Independent HARRISBURG — More than 250 of Pennsylvania‘s roughly 9,000 polling places were still without power Friday morning, creating a challenge for election officials as Election Day approaches. Gov. Tom Corbett on Tuesday said he was ordering the Public Utility Commission to tell power companies that polling places should be given priority for restorations. Power companies in eastern Pennsylvania, where most of the outages remain, say they expect power to be restored by Monday at the latest. Superstorm Sandy that struck Pennsylvania and the rest of the Northeast earlier this week presented a political challenge to candidates and a practical challenge to the state officials responsible for conducting next week’s …

In the most recent PECO update, from Friday afternoon, PECO reports about 125,000 customers still without power: “This is the worst damage I have ever seen,” said Pat O’Neil, a 25-year PECO veteran supervisor who has been working 16-hour shifts to restore service since the beginning of the storm. “Many of the areas we are working in had significant damage, including multiple downed trees and poles, downed wires, and damaged equipment. In some of these areas, we need to completely rebuild the electric distribution system and supporting infrastructure to restore service to our customers.” PPL reports 2,062 customers without power mostly in Upper Hanover, Franconia and Hatfield in Montgomery County.
