Fetters Mill Bridge Will Re-Open with Temporary Fix Within Two Weeks

Montgomery County officials made the announcement they will use a temporary fix to open up Fetters Mill Bridge in Lower Moreland.

Montgomery County officials have announced they are moving forward with a plan to open Fetters Mill Bridge within the next two weeks. Engineers will place wooden beams underneath the bridge that will allow cars to travel over Pennypack Creek. The repairs will be restricted to a three-ton weight limit that will allow one car to travel over the bridge at time. No trucks, buses or emergency vehicles will be permitted with the temporary fix. “I am thrilled beyond belief," Lower Moreland Township Vice President Jill Blumhardt said. "We’ve been trying to get it fixed since October. This is a solution that makes sense.” With the temporary fix, the bridge will be inspected every six months to ensure the safety of the residents. The Department of …

Fetters Mill Bridge Response Pleases Lower Moreland Officials

Montgomery County Commissioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards have responded to Lower Moreland's needs.

Montgomery County officials recently said they are looking into ways to re-open the Fetters Mill Bridge with a temporary fix since the detour has been up for close to six months in Lower Moreland. While the bridge opening would alleviate traffic build-up and headaches for motorists, the bigger picture is Montgomery County’s responsiveness to Lower Moreland Township. “They recognize that the problems exist,” Lower Moreland Township President Robert Demartinis said. “The County Commissioners are responding and we're very pleased with that.” With the continued detour in Huntingdon Valley, the Public Works Department is taking a look at the timing of the lights at Welsh Road and Huntingdon Pike to help with detoured traffic. “My hope is that …

what's dangerous is rush hour traffic speeding through the winding streets of bryn athyn and crossing that bridge much too fast. The bridge should remain closed to cars and be left to be admired in the historical district that it is the star player in. Rush hour traffic should stay where it belongs - on the major roads. Sorry everyone's route between Huntingdon Pike and the Starbucks in …   more ›

Representatives from Montgomery County are looking into ways to open the Fetters Mill Bridge after being closed for the last 5 months.

According to Montgomery County Commissioner Leslie Richards, officials are exploring ways to temporarily fix the Fetters Mill Bridge to avoid the headaches of detours in Lower Moreland. Montgomery County closed the bridge indefinitely in October due to structural concerns. Representatives from Lower Moreland, Bryn Athyn and Montgomery County agreed to revamp the bridge as part of the National Register of Historic Places in March of 2012. The bridge has been closed for the last five months, but according to a report on CBS.com, Richards said a temporary fix would be to place a wood beam under the bridge and put a limit on weight restrictions. Fetters Mill Bridge to be Revamped by the County

Montgomery County will fund a project to rehabilitate the historical structure.

After numerous discussions with Lower Moreland, Bryn Athyn and Montgomery County representatives, the Fetters Mill Bridge will enter the beginning stages of its redesign phase. Initially there was some debate whether or not to build a new structure or to revamp the already standing bridge. Since the bridge is part of the National Register of Historic Places, keeping as much of its original structure was a key part in the decision process. “We don’t want to tear it down because of the historical integrity of the area,” LM township manager Rich Mellor said. There have been ongoing talks between LM, Bryn Athyn and local residents about how to revamp the bridge. On their end, it was determined that restoring the historical piece of the …
