Officials at the middle school have taken measures to remove the group from Facebook and will use this incident to bring awareness about the dangers of the internet.
Last week it was learned that two middle school students in the Lower Moreland School District created a Facebook group with the goal of selling their personal belongings to other kids in the district. According to the school, the items sold on Murray Avenue grounds "mainly included athletic gear and electronic equipment," but there were also numerous pictures of weapons that appeared on the page that were to be sold by minors. Superintendent Dr. Marykay Feeley, teachers and faculty are now working on a solution to create awareness and make students conscious of the dangers of social media. On Tuesday, May 22, Deborah McCoy will speak with Murray Avenue students in a presentation about online issues such as cyber bullying. She is …
The potential for a run at 90 degrees sometime during the Memorial Day Weekend is real...but we'll first have to deal with a really slow moving coastal trough over the coming week.
Last week's article talked about the potential for a coastal low to develop and wreak havoc on our weather this week. The potential doth yield reality in this case as a coastal trough is aligned off of the Carolina coast and will slowly push northward into our area for the start of the new week. The good news? It won't rain all of the time. The bad news? It might take until Memorial Day Weekend for it to clear out of here. This trough's slow movement isn't unusual for May systems that develop and like to linger off of the Atlantic coastline. As the Bermuda High and the Southeastern US "heat high" develop, frontal boundaries tend to stall out along the East Coast, sometimes hanging out for a period of days before they finally get pushed …

Parks, roads departments being consolidated; county's legal department being rebuilt
Last fall, residents thronged a hearing held by the previous Montgomery County administration after a preliminary version of the 2012 operating budget proposed the elimination of the county's parks department, among other drastic funding cuts. That Board of Commissioners eventually passed a budget that hiked property taxes by 17.5 percent and kept the Parks and Heritage Services department intact. Thursday morning, Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro announced that the department had been eliminated, after all. Parks and Heritage will soon cease to exist. The same goes for the Public Property department and the department of Roads and Bridges. In their place will be a single, new department: Infrastructure and Public Assets. "The…
Meet the "Ethel" to our Lucy, Michele Buono.
I saw this on Facebook: A friend is someone who’ll raise bail money to get you out of jail. A best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell. From my experience, men can go for years without venturing from their homes for anything other than beer or a football game. If it can be brought into their homes via post, dropped from a helicopter or delivered on horseback, they’ll live happily in their caves. Women, on the other hand, need outside contact. More than that, we crave friends. But nothing in this world beats a best friend. A best friend knows you for all your charms and warts and pretends you have more charm than warts. I’ve been fortunate to have many friends. I’ve also been blessed to have a best friend. In fact, people call my…

The best pizza in LM went to Ricardo's in this week's Readers' Choice poll.
We asked who had the best pizza in Lower Moreland, and Ricardo's Mediterranean Restaurant ran away with just under half of the total votes in the poll. This BYOB restaurant in Fetters Mill Square offers up 19 styles of brick over pizzas with the following toppings: pepperoni, onions, black olives, sausage, broccoli, extra cheese, ham, tomato green or red peppers, anchovies, mushrooms, bacon, pineapple, spinach, roasted peppers, steak, avocado, chicken, sun dried tomatoes, prosciutto, chouriço. Ricardo's also won our Readers' Choice poll for the best Italian Restaurant. With the weather getting nicer it's a perfect place to enjoy a nice meal outside on the back deck as well. Franconi's edged out Illiano's by one vote for second place.
Bright, low maintenance annual plants will give your garden a color boost from summer until frost. Annuals are the icing on your garden "cake."
Each year I resolve to plant fewer annuals and save time—and then something happens. The weather warms up and I crave color. But I like to plant annuals I can plant and fuggedabout. Perennials add fabulous texture, color and variety to the garden, but they bloom for a short period each year. A backbone of trees, shrubs and perennials comprise the best-planned gardens, with some colorful annuals added for punctuation. Annuals brighten up a bare patch of ground. Want an instant focal point? Pot up some annuals in interesting pots and you're done. Group containers together for your own unique design and color variations. For a low-maintenance approach, re-use self-watering containers year after year. You'll find them at garden centers and …
