Lower Moreland School District Presents Internet Safety Event

The ‘Navigating Their Digital World’ event is open to all families in the Lower Moreland community.

The Lower Moreland School District (LMSD) will host its first “Navigating Their Digital World” event, May 14, from 6-8:45 p.m. at the Pine Road Elementary School.

The event is designed for any family in and around Lower Moreland, specifically for parents with children in grade four or older.

“I think it’s an important event, not only for everybody in our education community in Lower Moreland, but also outside of it,” Sue Casagrand, the district’s director of Technology, said. “Because, it’s such a big issue.”

According to Casagrand, the event follows the "Take 25" campaign, which encourages families to make child safety a national priority. She added that the idea for the “Navigating Their Digital World” event recognizes the ever-growing Internet and social media use by youth, and aims to help parents prepare their children by better understanding it.

“I want them to understand how to navigate their students’ digital world,” Casagrand said.

The event will start off with a presentation, titled “Operation Safe Surf” by Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General agent Mary McCoy Higgins.

Proceeding the hour-long presentation, participants will then head to the workshop sessions of the evening, each designed to enforce Internet-safety practices. Participants will be able to choose two of 10 Internet-safety workshops prior to the event.

Workshops starting at 7:15 p.m.:

  • “Choose Kind Online”
  • “Internet Safety for Parents of Grades 3-5”
  • “Learn how to Tweet using Twitter”
  • “Teenagers as Digital Citizens”
  • “Using Controls to Take Control”

Workshops starting at 7:55 p.m.:

  • “Bring your own Device (BYOD)”
  • “Cyber Safety for a Law Enforcement Perspective”
  • “Internet Safety for Parents of Grades K-2”
  • "Learn how to Tweet using Twitter”
  • “Teenagers as Digital Citizens”

The workshops will be facilitated by LMSD staff and faculty, and certain workshops will be facilitated by members of the Lower Moreland Police Department. In most of the workshops, Lower Moreland High School students will also be volunteering to assist participants.

The event will also feature drawings for the following digital prizes: Kindle Fire, iPod Touch, Interent Safety Books and software.
