President Obama Signs Executive Order Ending SEPTA Strike

At Governor Corbett's request, President Obama has signed an executive order appointing an emergency board to mediate the labor dispute.

SEPTA Regional Rail workers are headed back to work less than 24 hours after calling a strike due to intervention from the federal government.

President Obama on Saturday signed an executive order appointing an emergency board to mediate the labor dispute.

SEPTA's 13 Regional Rail lines will begin running as early as Sunday morning, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Governor Corbett asked Obama to get involved and appoint the emergency board, which will require SEPTA's Regional Rail employees to return to work for 240 days.

The short-lived strike went into effect 12:01 a.m. Saturday. More than 400 workers participated in the strike, the first in 31 years.

Regional Rail employees want a 14.5 percent raise over five years, which is about 3 percentage points more than SEPTA has offered, 6 ABC reported.

SEPTA's Regional Rail engineers have been working without a contract since 2010; the electricians have not had a contract since 2009.

I wonder what Corbett promised in return? The feds have no business getting involved or being asked to get involved. Fire anyone participating in the strike, there are plenty of people who would love their jobs....

We now live in a soft dictatorship. ONLY 240+ DAYS? WHY NOT BAN STRIKES FOR THE WHOLE YEAR! ITS PRETTY CLOSE AS IS!. SINCE WHEN IS IT A NATIONAL EMERGENCY WARANTING THE PRESIDENT'S INTERVENTION BY EXECUTIVE FIAT? WE have a mini dictator here. Why couldnt the gov. himself get a stay? WHY GO TO "KING OBAMA?" WHATS NEXT, EXECUTIVE ORDERS AGAINST NJTRANSIT WORKERS? THEIR CONTRACT IS UP. PRESIDENTIAL ORDERS AGAINST LARGE SOFT DRINKS? THE FREE AMERICA OF OUR GRDNDPARENTS DIED WITH THEM.

Even FDR was opposed to collective bargaining by government employees. Any government worker at any level who goes on strike should be summarily fired.

Anyone remember the last time SEPTA went on strike? Right after the Feds gave PA $Millions$ to go to highway repair. Where did this money go - to SEPTA! Now right after PA passes a higher gas tax (again for highway repair) SEPTA goes on strike. Where's this extra 17cents/gallon gonna go? To SEPTA of course. Who's going to lose again? The drivers on our roads. Not SEPTA!
