UPDATE: Upper Moreland Student Killed in Accident

A 17-year-old student lost his life after being struck by an SUV on Blair Mill Rd. yesterday.

Last night it was reported that a pedestrian was struck by an SUV at Blair Mill Rd. and Moreland Rd. It is now being reported that it was a 17-year-old student from Upper Moreland High School.

The Upper Moreland Police Department released the following update:

Upper Moreland Township Police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on November 13, 2012, at approximately 5:35pm, on Blair Mill Rd. near Moreland Ave. A 17 year old Upper Moreland High School student was walking across Blair Mill Rd. and he was hit while standing in the painted medial area of Blair Mill Rd.

The seventeen year old was taken to Abington Hospital for medical care.  Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, he was declared dead. An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Coroner of Montgomery County.

An investigation by the Upper Moreland Township Police Department began shortly after the accident. The driver of the striking vehicle is a 39-year-old Warrington woman, who was cooperative with police. She stayed on the scene and voluntarily provided blood to police. The investigation is ongoing: an analysis of her blood will be conducted, witnesses will be contacted, the striking vehicle will be inspected and reconstruction of the accident will be conducted by experts from the Upper Moreland Township Police Department and the Horsham Police Department.

The Vice Principal of Upper Moreland High School was notified of the accident last night and assembled a crisis team. Grief counselors are available for the students.

OMG God Bless the family of the young man killed. I can not imagine their shock and pain. The family and all his friends are in my thoughts and prayers. I just hope the driver was not texting! I see this everyday while on the road. nothing is that urgent that you cant pull over to text. Rest in Peace.

My deepest sympathy for this family. This is a loss no parent should have to suffer.

My deepest sympathy for his family and friends also go out. You are right, this is a loss no family should suffer through. It makes me angry about the situation that it was involved in. The intersection that is refered to is a place I come and go a lot. And I find it hard getting across the street from Lowes to the parking area of business across the street. I believe something needs to be done about it, and now with a young man paying for it with his life, is just terrible. He was in a place he felt safe to be in, and so it seems to me that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and it should not have been that way. I am happy to hear the driver stopped to attend to the young man. So many others drive off preffering to believe nothing happened. I don't know who to speak with regarding the hazard around the Blair Mill intersection, but if someone knows, please feel free to let me know and I will write a letter or call the old fashioned way.

This is not the first accident I have seen here. This is an EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS area, poorly conceived and designed. You have to be very "aggressive" if you want to make a left turn out of the one side or the other. You have to stick your nose out, and you have to slam on the pedal. I don't know how else to explain it. If you want to go across from one side of the strip mall to the other, you have to cross four lanes of traffic plus two turn lanes. It's insane. Something absolutely must be done. City planners need to be notified. There MUST be a traffic light installed at this intersection between the two strip malls. While I am deeply, deeply saddened by the loss of this young man, who was probably just trying to get across the street to get a bite to eat, I am not surprised this happened here. Not at all. It makes me so angry and sad that greedy developers slapped this "thing" together with no regard for the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

I think you all are not relating about the same part of blair mill road. This accident occured by the village mall (blair mill and moreland rds), not near lowes.
