Fall is the Perfect Time for Family Portraits

Change is in the air. The leaves are changing colors. The weather is changing. The air has a crispness to it that wasn’t there only a week or two ago. Fall is definitely in the air. It is the perfect time of year to gather the whole family and take some group photographs.

Before the big day, choose clothes in colors and styles that complement each other. Try to avoid bold patterns as those tend to distract from people’s faces. Instead choose a color theme that looks great on everyone. You can even bring a couple of changes of clothes to capture different styles.

Find a sunny day when the sky is bright blue with puffy white clouds and have some fun. Start with those traditional portraits then kick back and have some fun with it! Rake up a pile of leaves and toss them in the air or jump in a giant pile. Blow bubbles – everybody smiles around bubbles. Capture the moments when the smiles are the brightest and the giggles non-stop.

For those a little more adventurous, you can use dye packs. You know, just like the ones from the popular color runs. My friend and local Philadelphia photographer, Dani Almond at http://www.dalmondphotography.com captured these memories of the Murphy family at http://www.dalmondphotography.com/the-murphy-family/ as they prepared to empty their nest the next day.

The photo shoot began with the family in different colored t-shirts and khaki shorts smiling in the woods. The kids then changed into shirts representing their new schools and held banners from these places.

Then the Murphy family really had some fun. The family changed into white t-shirts and opened dye packs. Dani Almond was there to capture the grimaces and the smiles as the family was transformed. She truly captured their spirit – which is what is important with family photo shoots.

Talk about it with each other and find a way to capture your family’s spirit. You’ll never regret it.

Photo tip: Plan your outdoor photo shoot when the sun is the most flattering – before 10 AM and after 4 PM this time of year. If small children in are your group, aim for the morning when they have the most smiles.
