Fun Outdoor Photo Tips

Spring is the perfect time to get outside and take some pictures of your children. The weather is perfect. Mother Nature provides a magical back drop.

Photo tip of the month: When taking action shots you will want to use a higher shutter speed if your camera is capable of manual settings to capture the action.

Take advantage of the nice days that come with the end of the school year and go outside and take fun pictures with your children. Start with an easy lighting situation such as on the shady sides of a building, in the shade of some trees. Or take pictures in the early morning or late evening when the sun is not so bright. Working with your children in these situations makes it easier for your camera to measure the light more evenly when you are shooting in automatic. It also eliminates squinting and complaining about the sun being in their eyes.

The key is to have fun with it. Give them some directions and guidance, but try to avoid posing. They will fall into a more natural pose if you just show them what to do rather than molding them into it. The smiles and expressions will be more natural, too.

  • Picking flowers – even dandelions and letting them blow them into the wind
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Eating watermelon or ice cream – then watching it drip
  • Catching fireflies
  • Wearing sunglasses and hats
  • Get in close on their toes in the sand or in the grass
  • Kicking water in the surf
  • Hanging out with their pets
  • Swinging on a tire swing
  • Having a race

In other words, let you kids be kids and have some fun watching and photographing it. These are magical times in your lives and worth capturing in pictures.

When you are done taking pictures of your children, hand them the camera and let them take pictures of you. It is fun to see what comes out -- especially in this age of digital images where you are not worrying about wasting film or processing expenses.
