Local Students to be Honored for Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort

There will be a ceremony today, Dec. 14 at 8 a.m. at EASTERN, where a donation will be accepted on behalf of the American Ref Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

The Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) SkillsUSA school-wide officers have chosen to support the American Red Cross in their mission to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy as their community service project for the year.  In November, the SkillsUSA Officers collected $449 from fellow students, faculty, administration, and staff members.

After witnessing the effects of the storm locally and watching news footage of the widespread damage, the EASTERN SkillsUSA officers approached their SkillsUSA advisor, Ms. Karon Crickmore, about a potential fundraiser. Ms. Crickmore supported their endeavor, and the students immediately began their request of at least $1 per person. On December 14 at 8 a.m., Michelle Wigianto, Major Gifts Associate from the American Red Cross, will visit EASTERN to accept the donation on behalf of the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

The EASTERN SkillsUSA school-wide AM officers who spearheaded this initiative were Abigail Applebaum, EASTERN Culinary Arts student/SkillsUSA Vice President/Springfield High School senior; Chelsea Butler, EASTERN Culinary Arts student/SkillsUSA Secretary/Abington High School senior; Amy Pertuset, EASTERN Computer Network Administration student/SkillsUSA Treasurer/Upper Moreland High School senior; Marian Wiggins, EASTERN Cosmetology student/SkillsUSA President/Abington High School senior; Shawn Moore, EASTERN Computer Network Administration student/SkillsUSA State Officer/Upper Moreland High School senior; and Jonathan Aurit, EASTERN Electronics Engineering Technology student/SkillsUSA Recorder/Lower Moreland High School senior

The EASTERN SkillsUSA school-wide PM officers include Alexander Husarenko, EASTERN Computer Network Administration student /SkillsUSA Vice President/Hatboro-Horsham High School senior; Tatyana Leonova, EASTERN Commercial Art student/SkillsUSA President/Lower Moreland High School senior; and Miranda Cooper, EASTERN Allied Health student/SkillsUSA Secretary/Abington High School senior.

"Hurricane Sandy has affected all of us here at EASTERN in one way or another, but most of us have been very fortunate.  We may have lost power temporarily or experienced some basement flooding, but at least have a roof over our heads," said Karon Crickmore, EASTERN Computer Network Administration instructor and SkillsUSA advisor.  "Many people in New York City and in New Jersey were not as fortunate, and we want to help."
