Recap: Lower Moreland Holiday Basketball Tournament

Lower Moreland High School hosted its holiday basketball tournament last week and the boys and girls varsity teams both made it to the championship game. In the finals, however, both teams took the loss in what was an early season tester against non-league opponents. 

The boys team staved off a late comeback from Calvary Christian to earn a spot in the championship game with a 58-50 win. Junior Jake Cohen led all Lions in scoring with 24 points. Demitri Zoubroulis added 22. 

The Lions hung around in the final against Upper Merion, but poor free throw shooting ended up being the difference in a 58-45 loss. Senior Mike Mangan scored 18 a losing effort, including 10 in the first quarter. Zoubroulis chipped in with 14 while Cohen added seven.

The girls got past Harry S. Truman, 45-34, in their first-round matchup thanks to senior Allie Morganstein's game-high 27 points. Teammate Colleen Hagen, a sophomore, added nine points in the victory. 

In the championship game, LM was only had eight players dressed and fell to a talented Central Bucks West team, 52-18. Hagen scored 11 of the team's 18 points while Morganstein scored six. 

The boys (2-3) and girls (4-2) teams are back in action on Tues., Jan. 3. The boys play at New Hope while the girls are at Christopher Dock. Both games start at 7 p.m.
